Mohegan Lake Legal Defense Fund
History of this site
This site was originally set up to fight 3 of 5 zoning variances proposed by the FBC development at Sagamore Trail and Mohegan Ave that eliminates two single family homes while nearly quadrupling the parking and occupancy loads of the old Lakeland Jewish Center. That effort failed and the application is currently before the Planning Board.
While Save Mohegan Lake will continue to update you on that issue, we are moving on to all issues affecting the lake, such as Mohegan Lake Improvement District (MLID) meetings, agenda and budget. This site is not an official mouthpiece for MLID, but some updates will be provided on this site; the official site is located here.
We do it all here, so long as it's Mohegan Lake related. Feel free to submit comments, content, garage sale notices, police blotters, PSA's, essays on the virtues of our 105 acre ice rink, rants, raves, etc... We love it all.

As a resident, I want to sign the petition objecting to this new structure. Mohegan Lake needs to be preserved. The proposed changes will devastating to our neighborhood.
Celeste Foster. As a resident I feel that the scope of the proposed plan is too larger for the chosen location and also that the environmental impacts to the lake and wetlands have not been sufficiently addressed.
let's all do what we can, even in some small way, to protect Mohegan Lake for our children.

Churches are business enterprises that have no place in residential neigborhoods. This will have terrible consequences for the wetlands and lake. This plan would never be approved if this was southern Yorktown. Too bad our elected leaders are not actually from Mohegan Lake...if they were they would never approve or allow this.

this is too large for this location, not to mention the traffic and parking problems it will bring, and the environmental impact it will have on our small lake!
I support this cause - Alice, resident of Mohegan Lake
I am a prospective resident and have had my eye on Mohegan Lake for some time. I am extremely disheartened to learn that such a devastating change was nearly permitted. I will be watching this story and hoping for the preservation of this unique community.
To the disheartened prospective Mohegan Lake resident:
I understand the apprehension. However, I want to note that this is only a small (but prominent) corner of Mohegan Lake AND--so far the town has acted properly when presented with all the facts (they revoked the previous zoning variance I contested); I truly believe it was an honest error and they nipped that mistake in the bud, so to speak. A new application will be submitted by the church for consideration and it will be open again for public comment; that's exactly what I was asking for--a "do-over."
Mohegan Lake is populated by a wonderfully diverse, hard-working families who care for one another; that's the upside of this whole experience: I confirmed that I made the right choice moving our family here.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this tight-knit community as a place to raise a family.
Thanks Evan for spearheading this, setting up the the website, etc. I’ve been very concerned that our beautiful lake and wetlands creatures would be terribly affected by this. The swans nest on that corner every Spring (as they are right now). It is one of my favorite things to watch on the lake along with the geese and their babies crossing the road. I can only imagine what other casualties there might be with such a large increase in traffic.

Sarah and Mike Santoiemma...3476 Lakeside Dr.. we object to this new building..this is a QUIET neighborhood where we are raising our family.. not a place for a LARGE commercial building..
Technically it's not commercial. It's classified--legally--as a community facility. But that's almost besides the point. It's simply a matter of scale, as it is already large (parking/occupant-wise) and the proposal is much, much larger. Mega, some might argue.
My name is Alisa Clark Wissell and I lived at 3443 Lakeside Drive for close to thirty years. Mohegan Lake was a wonderful place to grow up for its NATURAL beauty and wonderful neighbors. It was always nice to come off of route 6 and be transported to a peaceful and serene lake community.I have moved to CT but come back to visit old neighbors or to simply drive through the neighborhood I always love. I was shocked to see the devlopment that took place on the corner of route 6 by CVS. The amount of trees they took down to put down yet another bank and stores almost brought me to tears. If more trees are taken down in the area noted, the natural habitat will be compromised! this section of the lake always had beautiful swans and geese who nested there. If they are allowed to take those trees down you can bet that it will be a ripple effect around the rest of the lake and the outcome will be terrible. PLEASE PLEASE do all you can to fight this!! Don't sit back thinking the next guy will stand up against it. SAVE THIS WONDERFUL LAKE!!! If I still lived there you can bet I would be there every step of the way to fight this but living in CT I am sure I have no rights any more although Mohegan in my heart will always be home. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the support, Alisa. We're doing our best to work with the developer and town to keep it in line with the interests of our unique, little community. Stay tuned, there's a bit of a lull in the action, but we'll be back in force a couple weeks ahead of 8/11/11, which is the next ZBA hearing for their zoning variance.
naomi & david klarberg 1423 delaware road - in the ten years we have lived here the amount of development is astounding and has had a negative impact. we do not oppose the church, just the size of it. to remove more trees around the lake for a parking lot is only going to add to the problems the lake has. every sunday morning when i drive by the church, there are cars parked all over the place and as a result have almost gotten into a car accident trying to navigate around the parked cars.
do not let them destroy more of the natural beauty in this neighborhood.
